MUSKOGEE, OK -- Some cockatoos and parrots can outlive a couple of generations of owners. Finding new homes for the exotic birds can be difficult. A new rescue group has formed in Muskogee with the goal of breeding new birds and saving older ones.
Ma and Pa Kettle make up one of two breeding pairs Bill Day has acquired to begin a nonprofit breeding and rescue program. The other pair is Fred and Wilma.
"The young obtained from that will provide breeding pairs to return to the jungle," said Bill Day of Green Country Parrot Rescue. "That's our ultimate goal."
But, it's probably eight or 10 years away. In the meantime, they've created a parrot and caged bird rescue organization. They've placed about half a dozen birds so far with more coming.
"We are probably gonna be getting a cockatiel, and umbrella cockatoo, and African Gray, and a Blue and Gold Macaw," said Bill Day of Green Country Parrot Rescue.
Many of the birds outlive their owners.
"This Amazon can live to be 100 years old," said Bill Day.
Bill Day has loved parrots for about 30 years, even the fish in his aquarium are parrot fish. Saving the beautiful birds is the goal of his project and now when they call for help, there's someone to answer.
