MUSKOGEE, Oklahoma -- Investigators say a 4-year-old child killed in a Muskogee home invasion late Tuesday evening was stabbed 36 times with a pair of scissors.
The victim was identified as Dakota Lane of Muskogee. His mother, Stephanie Lane, is an employee of Muskogee Public Schools, according to Melanie Carey, public relations director for the school district. Lane works in the cafeteria at Sadler Arts Academy in Muskogee.
Authorities say Stephanie, who is eight months pregnant, tried to fend off the attacker.
Aaron Michael Laconsello, 18, was arrested about an hour and a half after the incident on the campus of Bacone College.
Laconsello is being held in the Muskogee County Detention center and is expected to be charged with first degree murder, first degree burglary, and assault with a deadly weapon.
He was arraigned in court Wednesday afternoon, but was not formally charged.
According to Corporal Pedro Zardeneta, with Muskogee Police, officers were dispatched to a home in the 700 block of North N Street at about 9:49 p.m. to investigate a report of a mother and small child being assaulted.
Muskogee Police officers performed CPR on the child until paramedics arrived. Stephanie Lane was treated and released by medical personnel at the scene.
Family members said Stephanie did not know the suspect.
"It's just so senseless, that a four year old defenseless little boy have to be brutally murdered like he was," Jack Bumgarner, Dakota's grandfather, said.
Police have not commented on a possible motive for the attack.
"In my entire career, I've never seen anything like this," Zardeneta said.
Neighbors say Laconsello had been staying at a home several houses over from the Lanes, and they saw him drinking earlier Tuesday evening.
"Useless, waste of life," said Doug Armstrong, a neighbor. "I don't understand why it happened; I don't know what to say."
An account will be set up at any BancFirst branch in Muskogee, Melanie Carey said. The account will be established by Wednesday afternoon to help the family, she said.
Another account has been set up at the First National Bank of Muskogee.
