Moore was founded in the 1889 land run. The little town grew steadily for seventy years -- then it exploded in a frenzy of expansion and development. In 1961 approximately 21.6 square miles of additional territory was annexed and Moore became a city in 1962. The decade of the 60's saw Moore's population soar. Earl’s Rib Palace

Earl’s Rib Palace is located in the newly developed Riverwalk area in Moore. Earlywine “Earl” Jackson was born in Oklahoma in 1909. In his lifetime, he prepared barbeque for numerous notable people and achieved things many chefs only dream of, including being Elvis Presley’s personal chef for a time. His family carries on his traditions with his recipes. Join us on July 22 for barbeque, prizes, and lots of fun.

Big Wheel Nationals

Big Wheel Nationals is the ultimate kids Big Wheels race located in the heart of Moore at the Community Center. This family friendly event puts kids in a drag strip style race against fellow youngsters ages 4 to 8 on Big Wheels decorated by 25 of Moore’s local businesses. Come to the Moore Community Center to see the who is the fastest kid in town.

Moore Public Library

Oklahoma’s number one Meteorologist, Gary England, will teach kids about Oklahoma weather during an entertaining and informative weather presentation.

Brand Senior Citizen Community Center

Lauren Nelson and Christina Eckert will join in on a pool tournament and learn a trick or two about the game in the morning.

Showplace Market

Robin Marsh, Stan Miller and Jed Castles will stop by the Showplace Market on Tuesday to do some shopping, help with some crafts, and maybe get a feather extension or two.

Fun Facts About Moore »

  • Moore was founded during the land-run of 1889. The early settlers came on train, horseback, wagons, and some, on foot.
  • The town's original name was "Verbeck" as designated by the railroad company. However, a railroad employee named Al Moore, reported to be either a conductor or a brakeman, lived in a boxcar at the camp and had difficulty receiving his mail. He painted his name - "Moore" - on a board and nailed it on the boxcar. When a postmaster was appointed, he continued to call the settlement Moore.
  • In 1961 approximately 21.6 square miles of additional territory was annexed and Moore became a city in 1962. The decade of the 60's saw Moore’s population soar.
  • The 2010 Census reports a Population of 55,081 and makes Moore the 7th largest city in Oklahoma. Our school district is the 3rd largest in the state with over 22,500 students.
  • On May 3, 1999, Moore experienced the one of most violent tornado ever recorded. As a result, over 1,000 dwelling units were destroyed and some 3,000 to 4,000 residents were either temporarily or permanently displaced.
