A Swing in Seasons This Week

A Swing in Seasons This Week

It was a wintry weekend and temperatures Monday morning dipped to as cold as 3° in Oilton west of Tulsa. In just a few days, we can add SEVENTY degrees to that for the average high temperatures in our region. From winter to spring we’ll go in a hurry, but winter is far from done with us yet.                 Southerly winds are just starting to kick into gear in Green Country. It not only brings back the ... More>>

Taste of Winter on Tuesday

Taste of Winter on Tuesday

A small section of Green Country turned white on Sunday. Even more of our area may turn icy by Tuesday night. It’s not a major ice storm, but it doesn’t take much for some broad impacts across the area. Here’s the break-down. [img]                 Another cold front is pushing into Oklahoma on our Monday night. It will send those temperatures and wind chill values plummeting into the teens a... More>>

Big Temperature Swings and High Fire Danger This Week

Big Temperature Swings and High Fire Danger This Week

Winter has gone easy on us recently. Even with a cold start in the teens and 20s Sunday morning, temperatures rebounded (by 45° or more) in the afternoon with highs in the 60s. A cold front Sunday night is sending those readings plummeting into the 20s with wind chill values dipping to as cold as 10° for the start of our Monday. Even if moisture is missing, it’s clear our weather is acting up and won’t be settling down for a while.

First Storm Threat of 2018 is Here

First Storm Threat of 2018 is Here

It’s hard to believe we are talking thunderstorms just days after parts of Green Country had actual temperatures below 0°! The removal of the persistent eastern U.S. trough in the jet stream can be thanked for our dramatic warm-up this weekend. In this new pattern, another storm system is pushing in from the West. Instead of bringing Arctic air, this storm system is more like a spring one, drawing up Gulf moisture and warmth, which will clash along a cold front and dryline in ou... More>>

From 20s to 70s, our temperatures have been all over the place this weekend. Eastern Oklahoma has officially fully frozen over for the first time this season. For Tulsa, it was the first October freeze in 5 years Saturday morning. By Sunday afternoon though, we were basking in beautiful autumn sunshine with temperatures back above normal. It’s a roller coaster with these readings and the ride is far from over. [img]           &...More >>

We continue our streak of stormy weekends. The last few I’ve been away getting married and honeymooning, but I can certainly confirm firsthand we got rocked by heavy rain and wind Saturday night! Rain totals were more than an inch in almost all Green Country locations, topping 3” in some areas of southeast Oklahoma. You can see those totals below. Several tornadoes were reported fr...More >>

A transition in the months has yet to lead to a transition in the weather conditions for Oklahoma. September ended as October begins with warmer than normal weather. The graph below shows what seemed to be a fast transition to fall early in the month leading to a revival of summer temperatures in the latter half of September. Another big change in that trend awaits us in about a week. In the meantime, we’ve got a warm, dare I say muggy, week ahead with rain and storm chances. [...More >>

Fall Weather Arrives, But Isn’t Here to Stay Quite Yet

Muggy summer weather has overstayed its welcome, at least according to the calendar anyway. As we transitioned “officially” to fall last Friday, it felt more like the start of summer. A substantial cold front is slowly pushing into Green Country, bringing that long-awaited drop in temperatures and much-needed rainfall.  It’s a change that will set the stage for a series of mild days, but it won’t be the new normal… quite yet.    &nbs...More >>

Summer Heat Giving Way to A Good Taste of Fall

A well-timed cold front is coming into Green Country as we close out Labor Day Weekend. This will bring our summertime heat to a halt as gusty north winds bring cooler, drier air early Tuesday morning. This will give us our first good and prolonged taste of fall. We can now definitively say the worst of summer heat is behind us. I’m sure we’ll see more hot days in the coming month, but not in the near future.

Harvey’s Impact Expands And Signs of Fall Are Showing Up

We have been witness to one of the worst flooding disasters in U.S. history these past several days. Starting Saturday, heavy bands from Harvey started to really lash the Houston area with up to 6” per hour rainfall rates. Since that time nearly 40” of rain has occurred in parts of the metro area, just 10” shy of Houston’s YEARLY average rainfall total. While the full impacts there are still unknown, we do know Harvey’s impacts will continue to expand. [...More >>

This two-week cool spell has been an incredible mid-summer treat. For August so far, 2017 is the fifth coolest regarding our average high temperatures – the coolest in 20 years.  Alas, this streak is finally coming to an end. The building heat will be made more intolerable due to the abundant moisture in the air thanks to recent widespread rainfall.
