A Final Round of Storms, Then on to Oppressive Heat

A Final Round of Storms, Then More Oppressive Heat

The recent rainfall has been a huge blessing to Green Country… keeping it green a bit longer into the summer. Some places have seen nearly 3” of rain in the past several days, but it certainly varies from location to location drastically. The map below tells that story. If you have been among the “have nots,” you’ve got one more round of rain to potentially soak your soil before the summer furnace takes hold again. [img] We are in a “Northwesterl...

Summer Storms Return, So Does Triple-Digit Heat

Hopefully you had a chance to soak in the relatively cool July air this morning. Tulsa bottomed out at 66°, the coolest it has been in 2 weeks. This brief relief came about thanks to drier air wedging into northeast Oklahoma behind a backdoor cold front.

Holiday Heat Prevails, Storm Chances Remain

Holiday Heat Prevails, Storm Chances Remain

Forgive us for the number of times we say, “hot as a firecracker” in the coming days, but it certainly will be a true sentiment for the week ahead. A large heat dome is re-establishing itself over the central U.S., larger than ever this summer. The building heat combined with lots of residual moisture in our air means several days of dangerous heat index values lie ahead. [img] The aforementioned heat dome, shown above, is ruling our conditions this week.  The highe...

Stormy Pattern Returns, So Will The Heat

While summer officially begins this Thursday at 5:06am, our summer season has already been off to a running start. June 2018 is the 7th hottest June on record so far and the rain has cut off for extended periods of time. However, the next several days offer both cooler air and beneficial rain to help offset our nearly 6” rainfall deficit so far this year. Here’s what’s happening. Tropical moisture continues to surge north from the Gulf of Mexico while a potent storm...

From a Cold to Stormy Start to Spring

Temperatures on Monday took a big downward turn behind a strong early spring storm system. It mostly spared Green Country from severe weather, but we’ll feel the effects of it for the next few days as colder air continues to filter into the region. As we flip the season over to spring officially on Tuesday, we’ll still be stuck in this more winter-like set-up. But that will be changing significantly before Spring Break week is over.

It’s hard to believe that shortly after flooding rainfall, fire danger would be such a concern. However, March is a month known for big swings in Oklahoma and the pendulum has swung back to the dry pattern again.

Another Round of Rain on the Way

The sunshine has been welcome in the past couple of days after nearly a week of ice, flooding and downright gloomy weather. The rain was incredibly welcome considering our drought, but it was too much of a good thing in areas east of Tulsa where major river flooding occurred along the Illinois River. By Thursday, we’ll know the full impacts of the rainfall on the current drought when the new Monitor is released. In the meantime, we’re focused on a two-day rainy spell for G...More >>

    Drought-Denting Rainfall This Week

So far this year, Tulsa has seen a measly .77” of rainfall. More than half of that fell early Saturday morning. We are looking to quadruple that amount of rainfall in the week to come. Are you ready for a week of clouds, rain, wind and a dash of winter? The next 7 days have it all.                 Light drizzle and showers are breaking out here on our Sunday evening, a pre-cursor to the fire hose of mois...More >>

A Swing in Seasons This Week

It was a wintry weekend and temperatures Monday morning dipped to as cold as 3° in Oilton west of Tulsa. In just a few days, we can add SEVENTY degrees to that for the average high temperatures in our region. From winter to spring we’ll go in a hurry, but winter is far from done with us yet.                 Southerly winds are just starting to kick into gear in Green Country. A small section of Green Country turned white on Sunday. Even more of our area may turn icy by Tuesday night. It’s not a major ice storm, but it doesn’t take much for some broad impacts across the area. Here’s the break-down. Big Temperature Swings and High Fire Danger This Week

Winter has gone easy on us recently. Even with a cold start in the teens and 20s Sunday morning, temperatures rebounded (by 45° or more) in the afternoon with highs in the 60s. A cold front Sunday night is sending those readings plummeting into the 20s with wind chill values dipping to as cold as 10° for the start of our Monday. Even if moisture is missing, it’s clear our weather is acting up and won’t be settling down for a while.

First Storm Threat of 2018 is Here

It’s hard to believe we are talking thunderstorms just days after parts of Green Country had actual temperatures below 0°! The removal of the persistent eastern U.S. trough in the jet stream can be thanked for our dramatic warm-up this weekend. In this new pattern, another storm system is pushing in from the West. Instead of bringing Arctic air, this storm system is more like a spring one, drawing up Gulf moisture and warmth, which will clash along a cold front and dryline in ou...More >>

So far, 2018 is running about 5° below normal and that number is about to drop even further. We briefly thawed out Sunday afternoon as temperatures rose well into the 40s. That will seem balmy compared to where our readings go in the coming days.
