Fun Facts About Mustang And Yukon

  • Mustang and Yukon are both located near the Chisholm Trails which is a historic cattle trail on which 10-million cattle, one-million horses and 35,000 cowboys traveled to drive cattle from Texas to Kansas.
  • Yukon’s first football team was established and played in 1910.
  • Mustang got its name from the nearby Mustang Creek and was officially founded on November 22, 1901.
  • Yukon was founded around 1891 and the founders and generations after have worked hard to create the tight knit community that now has grown to more than 25,000 residents.
  • Mustang Town Center is one of only two centers in Oklahoma with a library, community center, fitness center and senior center under one roof along with a water park, sports fields and city park on the same property.
  • ‘Mulvey’s Pond’ in Yukon was the last guaranteed watering hold on the Chisholm Trail.
  • The Mustang Western Days Festival is one of the largest events in the county drawing over 30,000 people. It consists of a rodeo, parade, carnival, fun run as well as dozens more events.
  • A few of the most notable people from Yukon include Garth Brooks, the #1 selling solo artist in US history along with other Yukon natives Grady Cross, Cody Canada, Randy Ragsdale and Jeremy Plato who are all members of the former band Cross Canadian Ragweed.
  • Mustang established it schools in July 1902 with its first teacher Miss Etta Fisher who taught 45 students in the first year of school.
  • The first graduating class from Yukon was in 1904 and at that time the school’s mascot was the Panthers. That later changed to the Millers in either the fall of 1930 or the spring of 1931because of the significant role the Yukon Flour Mill played in the city’s development.
  • A few notable Mustang natives include 1996 Olympic Gold Medalist Wrestler Kendall Cross, two-time Olympic weightlifter Shane Hamman. Also, Dan Bailey grew up in Mustang and was a kicker for Oklahoma State as well as the Dallas Cowboys and Dennis Byrd was a defensive end and tackle for the New York Jets.
