WASHINGTON (AP) The United States trustee for Kansas, Oklahoma and New Mexico has died at the age of 56.

Officials with the U.S. Trustees in Washington say Mary E. May of Wichita, Kansas, died Saturday after a long battle with leukemia.

May had served as a U.S. trustee since September 2002, when she was appointed by then-U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft. The office is a part of the U.S. Justice Department that oversees all bankruptcy filings in the region and helps investigate bankruptcy fraud.

The U.S. Trustee Program has 21 regions and 95 field offices. Region 20 is headquartered in Wichita with additional offices in Oklahoma City, Tulsa, and Albuquerque, New Mexico.
