Fallen Heroes 2008


Private 1st Class Michael Phillips of Ardmore was killed February 24, 2008 when his Humvee was hit by a homemade bomb near Baghdad.  The 19-year-old was a member of the 101st Airborne based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.


Staff Sergeant Chris Hake of Enid was one of four soldiers killed in a roadside bomb in Iraq on March 23, 2008.  The 26-year-old was killed when a roadside bomb hit his vehicle in southern Baghdad. Staff Sergeant Hake joined the Army after graduating from the Oklahoma Bible Academy in 2000. He leaves behind a wife and young son.  Hake is the 65th Oklahoma soldier killed in Iraq.

Specialist William Allmon, 25, died on April 12, 2008, from wounds he sustained when a bomb exploded near his vehicle in Baghdad, Iraq.  The Georgia native had moved to Ardmore, he was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, Georgia. Specialist Allmon was on his second deployment to Iraq, he is survived by his wife, Jennifer, a 3-year-old son and an 11-year-old stepson.

Major Scott A. Hagerty, 41, died June 3, 2008, when a roadside bomb exploded next to his military vehicle during a patrol in Afghanistan. He was a trained civil affairs officer assigned to the 451st Civil Affairs Battalion, Pasadena, Texas. A resident of Stillwater, he twice saw active duty and had an 18-year career in the Army Reserve. He is survived by his wife, Daphne, and their two sons.

Sergeant 1st Class David Hurst, 31, of Fort Sill, was killed Saturday, June 7, 2008, in Baghdad after his vehicle hit an improvised explosive device.  Hurst was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), at Fort Polk, Louisiana. Sergeant 1st Class Hurst's military honors include the Purple Heart and Bronze Star.

 
Civilian Steven Farley of Guthrie died on June 24, 2008, after a bomb exploded at a district council building in Sadr City, Iraq, where he'd been working to build up the city's government. Farley volunteered to serve in Iraq after joining the State Department in April 2007. The 57-year-old was an Army veteran who served in Vietnam. He is survived by his wife Donna, and three sons.


Sergeant Dan Eshbaugh, 43, of Norman, was one of seven soldiers killed in a helicopter crash in southern Iraq on September 18, 2008. Eshbaugh served in Detachment 1, Company B, 2nd Battalion, 149th Aviation. The Oklahoma National Guardsman was mobilized in June and left for duty overseas in late August.  He leaves behind a wife and four children.

 
Corporal Michael Thompson of Kingston died on September 18, 2008, in a helicopter crash in southern Iraq.  The 23-year-old served in Detachment 1, Company B, 2nd Battalion, 149th Aviation.  Thomas was one of seven soldiers killed, including two other Oklahomans.

Chief Warrant Officer Brady Rudolf, 37, of Moore, died in a helicopter crash on September 18, 2008, in southern Iraq. Rudolph was one of three Oklahomans who died in the crash. The 20 year veteran of the Oklahoma National Guard served in Detachment 1, Company B, 2nd Battalion, 149th Aviation.
   
Staff Sergeant Brandon Farley, 30, of Haworth died on September 18, 2008, from wounds he sustained a day earlier in an attack on his mounted patrol in Able Monti, Afghanistan. Staff Sergeant Farley is survived by his parents, a brother and two sisters. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

Specialist Stephen Zapasnik of Broken Arrow died December 24, 2008, after the Humvee he was in rolled off a collapsed road and into a canal in Baghdad, Iraq.  The 19-year-old was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 16th Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado. Two other soldiers also died in the accident.
