OKLAHOMA CITY -- A new wind farm in far western Oklahoma that recently began delivering energy is the ninth in the state.
Officials from Acciona Energy North America gathered Saturday for a dedication ceremony for the Red Hills Wind Farm, located in Roger Mills and Custer counties near the towns of Elk City and Hammon.
The farm with 82 wind turbines could generate 123 megawatts of power annually, which company officials say is enough to power more than 40,000 homes. It is Acciona's second wind farm in the U.S.
The energy generated by the farm is being sold to Western Farmers Electric Cooperative of Anadarko under a 20-year power purchase agreement that started June 1.
According to the Oklahoma Department of Commerce, other wind farms in Oklahoma are located near Woodward, Fort Supply, Lawton, Weatherford and Buffalo.
