TULSA, OK -- Oklahoma Congressman John Sullivan has returned to Tulsa from a stint in rehab for alcoholism at the Betty Ford Clinic in California. He began rehabilitation on May 28 for a self-described binge drinking problem.

He called his battle with alcoholism the most "challenging time of my life."

Now after completing rehab, he says his time there has strengthened him.

A 44-year-old Republican, Sullivan has successfully overcome adversity in his political life.

He's been re-elected several times since first running for Congress in 2002. But In May, he admitted a personal defeat.

Saying he was losing his battle with alcoholism, he checked himself into the Betty Ford Center in California.

Sullivan requested a leave of absence from Congress, and at the time, his constituents backed the decision.

After emerging from rehab, Sullivan released a statement Sunday:

A Message from Congressman John Sullivan

I have completed my treatment at the Betty Ford Center and I am now back home. Words can't begin to describe how truly grateful I am for all the prayers, letters, kindness and love that you have expressed to me and my family.

My time at the Betty Ford Center gave me the opportunity to reflect on my life and afforded me a clearer perspective on what is truly important: God, family, friends and service to others.

Although this was certainly not what I had planned for my life it has turned out to be something that has strengthened me. I am already back to work. All of you have stood by me in this difficult time and I will stand stronger than ever for you in the US Congress.

Thank you and may God bless you and your families.

Sincerely, John Sullivan

Sullivan says he is already back at work. As he returns to Capitol Hill, whether or not his constituents will continue to stand beside him remains to be seen.
