WALDRON, Ark. (AP) - A Scott County man charged with two counts of first-degree murder has pleaded not guilty.
Clifford Mac Ritter's attorney entered the plea on Tuesday during a Scott County Circuit Court hearing.
The 64-year-old Ritter has been charged with fatally shooting 77-year-old Charles F. Paluso of Altus, Okla., and 37-year-old David Fritschie along State Highway 28 near the community of Bates - just east of the Oklahoma state line - on May 13.
Paluso, a retired Air Force colonel, owned property along the highway. Fritschie worked for a company that was installing a water line in the area.
After Ritter's plea was entered, prosecutor Tom Tatum II asked a judge to order Ritter to undergo a mental evaluation. Circuit Judge Jerry Don Ramey says he will research whether he can grant that request.
