OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - The U.S. Senate has voted to name two southeastern Oklahoma buildings after former U.S. Rep. Wes Watkins.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture's South Central Agricultural Research Laboratory in Lane and the U.S. post office in Bennington now will bear the name of the 70-year-old Watkins, who spent 20 years in the U.S. House.
Watkins graduated from Bennington High School in 1956.
The Senate passed the measure honoring Watkins on Monday night in Washington. U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe, R-Okla., says Watkins had a record of distinction and that naming the two buildings in his honor will remind people of everything Watkins has done for Oklahoma.
Watkins served in the House from 1977 to 1991 as a Democrat, and later returned to Congress as a Republican, serving from 1997 to 2003.
