SULPHUR, Okla. (AP) - Officials say $500,000 in federal funding has been approved for a visitors center at the Chickasaw National Recreation Area in southern Oklahoma.
U.S. Rep. Tom Cole says his request that the money be earmarked for the visitors center this week. Cole says the money will be used for a study and he hopes to get funding for the center's construction next year.
Cole is a member of the appropriations subcommittee for the U.S. Department of Interior - which oversees national parks.
Park ranger Eric Leonard says the Chickasaw National Recreation Area was established in 1902 and has about one million visitors each year. The area is south of Sulphur in Murray County.
