TULSA---"Hello Chicken Fry!" is a phrase you'll hear shouted at the buffet line at Nelson's Ranch House. Since 1929 the Rogers family has been serving up soul food and especially their delicious chicken fried steaks from their downtown location, and since July at their new location at East 3rd and South Trenton.
‘I'm the third Nelson,' said Nelson Rogers, known also as Barry, ‘my dad was Nelson Jr., my granddad Nelson Sr., so what I did was combine Nelson's history and the Ranch House, so it's Nelson's Ranch House serving Nelson's Buffeteria food. '
The informal style of the Ranch House and the buffet style service is a great combination for the midtown neighborhood just a mile or so east of downtown, and Nelson says many of his loyal customers have joined the locals at the new location. The staff at Nelson's Ranch House also followed in the move from downtown and brought the original recipes with them.
‘When I used to watch the other chef down there cook, L.C. Smith,' said head chef Eddie Bagsby, ‘that's how I learned how to cook like he did, by watching him. Our motto is "hello chicken-frys, hello pan-frys" and our customers like to hear it.'
Nelson's Ranch House is located at 1547 E. Third Street in Tulsa.
