TULSA, OK -- The postal Service has issued its holiday stamps for this season, and one of them has a Tulsa connection.
The new Hanukkah stamp features a menorah created by Tulsa artist Lisa Regan. Lisa Regan's Garden Deva Sculpture Company is full of her holiday creations: trees, small ornaments, and big snowmen.
She cuts them out of steel with a plasma torch.
She's been making stuff like this since the early '90s; now one of her creations is pictured on the Postal Service's new Hanukkah stamp.
"I actually designed that for the photograph so it would photograph well," said Tulsa artist Lisa Regan.
A Washington D.C. photographer was looking for a menorah to be photographed for the new stamp, but he couldn't find everything he was looking for. Then the photographer's wife saw one of Lisa's non-traditional menorahs in a garden boutique in Maryland.
"This is more along the lines of what I normally do," said Lisa, showing off one of her creations.
So Lisa worked with Ira Wexler the photographer they agreed on a design and that was that. The postal service fell in love with it.
"It wasn't me going out and looking for the work; it just totally fell into my lap," Lisa said. "People say ‘how did you get that, congratulations.' It really was nothing to do with my skills what-so-ever."
The Postal Service released the new stamp last month.
"What's cool is it's a postage stamp," Lisa said. "I'm encouraging all my friends, Christian and Jewish, to use that for their holiday stamp."
The Garden Deva Studio is located at 3rd and South Trenton near downtown Tulsa. It's open Monday through Saturday.
