UNDATED -- Make your shopping list now for the back-to-school sales tax holiday weekend. Some purchases will be exempt from retail sales tax beginning at 12:01 a.m. Friday, August 6 through midnight Sunday, August 8.

Most clothing and footwear purchases – for items under $100 – will be exempt from sales tax during that time. The tax holiday does not apply to accessories or special clothing and footwear designed for athletic activity or protective use, according to the Oklahoma Tax Commission web site.

Consumers save money and businesses get a badly needed boost, notes Benny Vanatta, state director of the National Federation of Independent Business.

"Sales tax holidays are great for families trying to stretch a dollar, but they're also great for small businesses," Vanatta said.

"They get people excited and in the mood to shop, and that's exactly what our economy needs right now.

"Small business is the engine that drives Oklahoma's economy," Vanatta said.

According to the U.S. Small Business Administration, small businesses account for about 97% of all employers in the state and employ about 54% of the state's private-sector workforce.
