Oklahoma City police say a key piece of evidence was sitting in the living room of a suspect in a hit-and-run accident.

Police were called June 24 to an accident with injuries at N.W. 36th Street and Barnes just after 5:30 p.m. When officers arrived, they were told the driver who caused the crash had left the scene.

Witnesses told police the suspect's car hit another vehicle with three people inside. Two of those people sustained injuries. The third person, who said he wasn't hurt, told police he chased the suspect's vehicle after it left the crash site. He gave the address to police.

Police went to the address and saw a car with severe front-end damage parked outside. An officer knocked on the door and a man, later identified as 26-year-old suspect Nathanael Benner, answered.

The officer said he immediately smelled the odor of alcohol, and Benner had slow, slurred speech and sluggish movements. The officer asked Benner to come with him back to the crash scene. He said when Benner opened the door all the way, he could plainly see the front bumper of Benner's car sitting in his living room.

Witnesses positively identified Benner as the driver of the vehicle that left the scene. Police arrested Benner and booked him on counts of leaving the scene of an injury accident, leaving the scene of an accident without required notice, and failure to yield at a stop sign.
