Police are trying to figure out why a driver took off from a traffic stop early Sunday morning, ultimately crashing and dying near an Oklahoma City business.

Police pulled the man over around 3 a.m. at Hefner and Portland near Lake Hefner. The officer says while he was checking the driver's insurance, the driver sped away from the stop.

Police say the man was speeding and lost control of his car. He hit something that launched his car 75 to 100 feet. The vehicle landed in front of Children's Eye Care in the 11000 block of Hefner Pointe Drive.

Rescue crews pulled the man from the wreckage, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released.
