TULSA, Oklahoma -

A Tulsa neighborhood has been singled out as one of America's most dangerous.

According to a real estate website, the danger zone is the area bordered by Peoria, Apache and Highway 75.

But Tulsa Police data doesn't match the statistics cited by the website.

Police officers from the Gilcrease division respond to crimes across north Tulsa. Officers say crime is actually down in that neighborhood, so they're shocked to see it on this list.

Elizha Whitney works at the new Tropical Smoothie Café. It sits in an area that a recent study deems dangerous.

"It makes me laugh that this would even be considered one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Oklahoma, let alone the country," he said.

Whitney also lives in this area and he said the stereotypes just aren't true.

"A couple nights I've left my key in my door on my way in and woke up the next morning, looking for my keys, and found them in my door, just fine. Nothing tampered with or anything," Whitney said.

The Neighborhood Scout website said people in this area have a 1-in-15 chance of becoming a violent crime victim. The site claims statistics on rapes, armed robberies, aggravated assaults and homicides are based on data from the FBI and U.S. Justice Department.

But Tulsa Police say the website's stats don't add up with police reports.

"That area, broken down into what we call geo-codes, showed that there is a 10 percent reduction in crime," Captain Steve Odom said.

So far this year, the city has had 24 homicides. The first one of the year happened in that neighborhood.

"Sure, it's going to have some issues inside of it, but not a violent place to live," Odom said.

The area is mostly residential, but there are popular spots that attract people, like Booker T. Washington High School and the new Shoppes on Peoria.

Veteran officers were shocked to learn this area has caught the attention of a national real estate neighborhood search website.

"That's an area that I'm familiar with and I've worked in several different times over my career, and I didn't recognized it as being a bad area," Odom said.

The top three dangerous neighborhoods on the list are in Detroit. There are also a few in Chicago and Houston.
