SALLISAW, Oklahoma -

Federal and state authorities are offering up to a $2,500 reward for information about the death and mutilation of an American bald eagle found in Sallisaw in March, 2013.

An Oklahoma Department of Wildlife game warden said the eagle's carcass was found on the sidewalk of the Motel 6.

An initial evaluation revealed the talons of the bald eagle had been removed along with tail feathers and several larger primary wing feathers.

State authorities contacted the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service who began an investigation, according to Tom Buckley, FWS spokesman.

Buckley said from looking at a photo of the dead eagle it appeared to be a juvenile, because it had not yet developed the classic white head feathers.

The FWS has conducted forensic testing on the bird.

Buckley said they have not determined if the bird was from Oklahoma or another state. Even if the eagle died naturally, Buckley says bald eagles are protected by the Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act as well as Oklahoma statutes.

Anyone with information concerning the death of the bald eagle is asked to contact U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Office of Law Enforcement at 405-715-0617.
