OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Former congressman J.C. Watts says he will let Oklahomans know in about a month whether he intends to run for governor next year.

Watts appeared at the Republican Party's state convention this weekend and said he was not trying to "play politics" with the decision. Watts says it is a serious choice for him and his family.

A former Oklahoma quarterback, Watts became the first black person elected to statewide office in the state as a Corporation Commissioner. He then represented the state for four terms in the U.S. House before deciding not to seek re-election in 2002.

U.S. Rep. Mary Fallin and state Sen. Randy Brogdon have already announced they will seek the Republican nomination.
