TAHLEQUAH, OK -- Tahlequah hosted The Red Fern Festival on April 25th and 26th. The third-annual event celebrated the book Where the Red Fern Grows written by local author Wilson Rawls.
"Since the book was set in 1930's rural Oklahoma we like to bring out so of the nostalgic aspects of that," said Kate Kelly with the Tahlequah Area Tourism Council. "It's definitely a family atmosphere, everything is free, we're very proud of that. We have a parade tomorrow and Stuart Peterson, who played Billy in the 1974 movie, will be Grand Marshal of the parade."
Visitors enjoyed food from many vendors and tasted the creations of The Redfern Chili Cook-off and Barbeque Extravaganza. Redbone hounds like those in the book competed in hound dog field trials and the kids caught live crawdads from the crawdad hole!
