Owasso Man Says He Was Attacked By Cab Driver

OWASSO, OK -- An Owasso man says a cab driver attacked him with a screwdriver, and yet, nobody seems to be doing anything about it, not the cab company or the police.
Scott Beals says he left the Pink Bar at 18th and Boston in Tulsa and a Checker Cab driver agreed to take him to Owasso for $25. He says the driver dropped off Scott's date and took him to an ATM, so Scott gave him $30.
"He immediately flew off the handle and started screaming at me in the back of the cab, ‘$70 dollars. Give me $70 right now or I'm calling the police.' And, I was like, well, call the police, ya know," said Scott Beals.
Beals says he gave the driver $20 more, for a total of $50, but refused to pay the $70.
"Then it turned pretty violent, then it was give me my money now or I'll kill you, give me my money or I'll kill your family," said Scott Beals.
Both men got out of the cab and Beals says the driver reached for something in his pocket.
"He had a screwdriver in his hand and came at me and swipes at me, left marks and tore my shirt open, right here in my driveway," said Scott Beals.
Beals says he kicked and shoved the driver back into the cab, who drove off. Beals called police, and then Checker Cab.
He says the owner was rude and cussed at him and told him there were 65 drivers who are independent contractors, so without a cab number, he couldn't help him.
"It's not like I'm trying to sue or want money, my life was threatened and I have two children stay here sometimes. Anybody crazy enough to do that is crazy enough to do something else," said Scott Beals.
An Owasso Police sergeant told The News On 6 they are investigating.
The owner of Checker Cab also yelled after inquiries from The News On 6 and said he had no way of knowing which driver it was. When asked him if he was surprised one of his drivers attacked someone, he said it was police business.
The city's cab licensing office says it can only take action if the driver is convicted of a crime.
