NATIONAL WEATHER SUMMARY:

Across the East, a cold front moved off the Northeast coast today allowing rain showers to come to an end. Front trailed back across the Mid Atlantic and into the Southeast where rain and thunderstorms were common through the day. Heaviest rain fell from the Carolinas to southern Mississippi where some areas received up to an inch of rain. A few storms became severe across southeast Georgia and northeast Florida with some minor hail and wind damage reported. Showers and thunderstorms pushed out of southern TX and the lower Mississippi Valley by the evening hours as a large high was building in from the north. This high brought cool weather to the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes area with a few record lows set across Iowa. Southerly flow on back side of high allowed for temperatures to warm into the 70s and 80s across the Plain states.

Over the western US, a large ridge of high pressure brought mainly sunny skies and very warm temperatures throughout. The only reports of rain were some late day thunderstorms which developed over portions of southwest New Mexico and southern Arizona. One storm became severe with strong wind gusts near Freeman, Arizona. The big story across the west was the heat with temperatures warming into at least the 80s in every state with 90s and 100s across the Southwest. Several record highs were broken or tied for the day across California, Nevada and Arizona. Some of the records include: Springerville, AZ (85); Oakland, CA (91); Palmdale, CA (102); Bakersfield, CA (105); and Fresno, CA (106).

ON THIS DATE IN HISTORY:

In 1960, Salt Lake City, UT picked up 1 inch of snow which marked the cities latest measurable snowfall of record.

In 1987, low pressure off shore of VA brought heavy rains to portions of the east coast. Franklin County, PA received 5 inches of rain in a 24 hour period and Spartanburg County, SC reported hail for 45 minutes which accumulated to several inches.

In 1995, A tornado outbreak hit portions of the mid Mississippi Valley and Ohio Valley with a reported 86 tornadoes. Six people were killed in all with half of those being in Ethridge, TN.
