NATIONAL WEATHER SUMMARY:

Areas from the Southeast to the mid-Atlantic experienced periods of moderate to heavy rain through much of the day. Widespread rain amounts of 1-2 inches were reported with some areas even receiving 3 inches or more. This caused flooding concerns for many areas as flash flooding was reported in areas of Virginia and North Carolina. Areas of the Northeast and New England remained quiet and dry through the day.

A strong thunderstorm developed over the Texas panhandle and moved south through west Texas Thursday evening. This storm produced very strong straight-line winds across an area from Amarillo, TX to Lubbock, TX. Numerous reports of 60-70 mph wind gusts came in as the storms moved through west Texas in the evening. Areas from the mid-Mississippi Valley north through the Upper Midwest enjoyed quiet weather with no rain in sight.

Severe storms were reported in Oregon Thursday afternoon and evening. A tornado was reported in Peoria, OR when a man called the National Weather Service and swore that a tornado dropped down and tore off the corner of his roof. This was the only report of a tornado as most people experienced hail and gusty winds. Estimated wind gusts of 50-60 mph were reported with accompanying hail of 1 inch in size. Scattered showers and thunderstorms were fairly widespread across the western US, mainly in the mountains. Periods of heavy rain over southern Idaho even produced a few reports of flash flooding in the area.
