NATIONAL WEATHER SUMMARY:

In the East, rain turned to heavy rain and then to severe weather for areas around Pittsburgh, PA, yesterday. Storms continued over the same areas of eastern OH, northern WV, and southwestern PA for numerous hours in the evening. Rainfall amounts of 1-1.5 inches were recorded. Hail stones up to 1 inches were also reported numerous times in the area. The perpetual heavy rain caused numerous instances of flash flooding. Earlier in the day rain moved through Lower Michigan and produced a few areas of flash flooding. Flint, MI reported 3.14 inches of rainfall early in the day. Severe storms also developed in the afternoon and evening over areas of Georgia, the western Carolinas, eastern Tennessee, and Kentucky.

Numerous reports came in of damaging winds and large hail. Trees were downed throughout the areas causing power outages and road closures. Heavy rainfall also accompanied the strong storms and produced areas of flash flooding for portions of Knoxville, TN. Rainfall amounts of 0.50 inches to 0.75 inches were widespread.

Across the central portion of the country, severe storms developed in the afternoon and evening hours for portions of MN, NE, IA, and northern MO. Numerous reports of tornadoes came in across the area. Damage and minor injuries were reported in Austin, MN as multiple tornadoes moved through the cities northern areas. Another tornado was reported in north-central MO where a spotter reported an estimated 100 mph wind gust in Norborne.

In the West, scattered showers and thunderstorms developed over areas of the Great Basin and much of the Rocky Mountains. Most areas received more rainfall with some rumbles of thunder, but there were a few severe storms over eastern CO. As storms pushed off the Front Range in northeastern CO they produced hail stones up to 1-1.5 inches with a 2.5 inches measurement coming out of Wray, CO.

ON THIS DATE IN HISTORY:

In 1958, four-inch hailstones killed livestock from Joliet to Belfry in Carbon County, MT.

In 1989, wind and rain, and hail up to seven inches deep, caused more than five million dollars damage at Oberlin, KS.

In 1989, unseasonably hot weather prevailed in the southwestern U.S. In Arizona, afternoon highs of 103 degrees at Winslow, 113 degrees at Tucson, and 115 degrees at Phoenix were records for the date.
