TULSA, OK -- Emergency crews responded to a river rescue shortly before 11:00 a.m. Thursday in the 800 block of South Phoenix.

Crews with the Tulsa Fire Department responded after receiving a call from a passerby who reported two people stranded in the Arkansas River.

Crews responded, but found nothing. They continued up the river and found two men between the ages of 40 and 50, fishing on a sandbar.

Because of the recent heat spell and lack of rain, the water condition at that part of the river was very shallow, resulting in difficulty for the rescue boat to reach the men, crews said.

With only about six inches of the sandbar still visible as the water continued to rise, the potential victims were removed from the sandbar and transported by boat to the bank of the river.

The fishermen were rescued uninjured.
