TULSA, OK -- Police have released the name of a 69-year-old man that was killed while walking on the Broken Arrow Expressway near Harvard early Friday morning.
Police say Gary Elias was killed instantly after being struck by an eastbound pickup truck.
The accident happened at 5:15 a.m. Friday just east of the Harvard exit ramp.
Police officer Jason Willingham says the victim was walking along the BA after his vehicle had had a flat tire about 100 yards from the accident scene.
"This tragic incident happened in a split of a second. It's tragedy for everyone involved so you've got to be very, very careful. It doesn't matter what time of day or not it is," said Tulsa Police Captain Travis Yates.
Police shut down the eastbound lanes of the BA while they investigated the accident.
The 31-year-old driver of the pickup truck also suffered minor injuries.
Eastbound traffic was diverted at the Harvard exit. Traffic was backed up for miles in the westbound lanes of the BA as well.
The accident remains under investigation.
