TULSA, OK -- Volunteers are working overtime to make sure a new Tulsa charter school is ready for the first day of classes. They showed up Saturday to help unpack furniture at the new school located at 4821 South 72nd East Avenue.
The Discovery School of Tulsa is a public charter school focusing on math, science and technology. School officials are accepting 350 students this year, and more than 700 students applied. The school used a lottery system to determine who got in.
The school's principal says he's excited so many parents are interested.
"We are really happy to have that many applicants for our school," said Principal Fevzi Simsek.
"I think that's because of the success of other schools we've had like the science academy in Oklahoma City. So this, it's going to be the same success story."
Classes begin August 20, the same day as Tulsa Public Schools.
