BROKEN ARROW---Broken Arrow Public Schools have already had five cases of H1N1 influenza, also known a Swine Flu infect the students although the school year has just begun.

In a press release the district has admitted students from Wolf Creek Elementary, North Intermediate High School, Park Lane Elementary, Centennial Middle School and Country Lane 4th and 5th Grade Center were diagnosed with ‘strongly suspected' cases of H1N1, or Swine Flu.

‘Our parents expect clear and open communication from the school district on this issue,' said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Gary Gerber, ‘we also hope that parents clearly communicate symptoms of their students when notifying our school of any absences.'

As part of the district's policy, parents were alerted of the illnesses through the district's all-call phone system. The school system has also posted a list of answers to frequently asked questions related to the Swine Flu on the district's website at www.baschools.org.

Additional information may be found by calling the school nurse or health professional at their child's school. The district also encourages parents to visit the Center for Disease Control website at www.cdc.gov

‘The incidences that have been reported here in Broken Arrow have been mild,' said Lead Nurse Douglas Drill, ‘of the few that we are aware of, two are already back in school again and had been fever-free for greater than 24 hours, so they're eligible to return to classes as usual.'

Drill asks all students to wash their hands often, to not touch their eyes or mouths and to stay home if they are ill.
