TULSA, OK -- With current Tulsa Mayor Kathy Taylor deciding not to run for a second term, that left the door open for new leadership.
Eighteen candidates signed up including two independents. In the Democratic primary, state Senator Tom Adelson won with 95 percent of the vote. His closest challenger, Accountability Burns had just 2 percent.
On the Republican ticket for mayor, the results were closer. Former Tulsa City Councilor Dewey Bartlett Jr. picked up 54 percent of the vote. His closet challenger, another former City Councilor Chris Medlock, got 31 percent.
Anna Falling came in third with less than 10 percent of the vote.
Both men appeared on Six in the Morning Wednesday morning and talked about the upcoming campaign.
Both now advance to the November 10 general election.
Three city council races have stirred up storylines for weeks. In them, Tulsa firefighters have been actively campaigning to oust sitting councilors that they say are looking to make drastic cuts to the fire department's budget.
Their crosshairs were on District Five Councilman, Bill Martinson. Firefighters were backing Chris Trail, the businessman behind Ike's Chili. Trail was able to edge out Martinson.
Retired firefighter Bart Rhoades challenged Rick Wescott in the District Two Republican primary. Rick Westcott will retain his council seat.
Fire crews have also been crusading to oust District Four's Eric Gomez. He was able to beat a challenge from fellow Republican Rocky Frisco.
The three targeted councilors have questioned whether city employees can campaign against them. They say it violates the city charter. The city attorney says the firefighters are just exercising free speech.
As Eric Gomez advanced to the General Election in District Four, so did Democrat Maria Barnes. That makes the race a rematch from two years ago.
In District Eight, incumbent Bill Christiansen holds off two challengers and will return to his seat on the council.
The matchup for the November General Election in District Six will have Councilor Dennis Troyer meeting former Councilor Jim Mautino, who won the Republican primary.
Councilor Jack Henderson from District One and District Seven Councilor John Eagleton weren't challenged.
Districts Three and Nine didn't hold primaries either. Candidates from both parties simply advance to the general election.
And, in the race for City of Tulsa Auditor, it will be Republican Preston Doerflinger who will face incumbent Phil Wood.
