OKLAHOMA CITY -- Animals with a dark coat are often overlooked by those wanting to adopt.

It may seem ridiculous, but pet rescuers say there's nothing funny about "Black Dog Syndrome" and the phenomenon is widespread.

It's not just black dogs that are overlooked, it's black cats too. There are so many up for adoption right now, the Central Oklahoma Humane Society is having a Black Beauty Adoption Special.

Looking to adopt an animal that will fit in a one bedroom apartment, Emily Meyette is checking out the kitties available. When she saw the signs boasting special rates for darker pets, she thought it strange.

“My parents have a black lab, and a black cat. I grew up with both of them,” said Meyette, who is looking to adopt.

Among those in animal rescue circles, an excess of black animals is commonplace. Although there are no statistics to back it up, shelter workers can attest.

“We have some great black cats. They're some of the most affectionate cats that we have, and yet they still stay in our system and are not being adopted out,” said Cara Russell with the Central Oklahoma Humane Society.

Perhaps it's because of superstition with cats, or that black dogs appear older because of facial hair that may be white or grey. Whatever the reason, the Black Beauty adoption special at the Central Oklahoma Humane Society offers a steep discount for those looking for a darker coated companion this week. A dog is normally $150, but dogs with at least 80% black coats can be adopted for $25. Black cats are also part of the adoption special for $25, and are normally $70.

“There are animals that show tons of expression in their face, and people think, because of that they're more friendly, more outgoing. So it does play into a fear that they might be a more aggressive, or mean animal,” Russell said.

Emily's is still unsure about whether or not she's home enough to get another pet. But if or when she does, she says she'll be sure to consider a kitty of any color.

“I have one, and he gets very lonely by himself so I'm looking for something, just for him to play with, a friend for him,” Meyette said.

The Humane Society's goal is to find homes for 50 black pets this week. The Black Beauty Adoption Special runs until Sunday, October 4. The Oklahoma Humane Society is at 7500 North Western Avenue.
