TULSA, OK -- Tulsa's Gilcrease Museum announced a major acquisition Thursday morning.
During a news conference, Gilcrease Museum and University of Tulsa officials said the acquisition is the master works of Charles M. Russell.
Museum officials say this acquisition establishes the museum's position as the finest collection of materials related to one of American West's most celebrated artist.
The collection includes more than 13,000 objects that cover the full range of the artist's life and work.
"Our acquisition will allow Gilcrease to open new avenues of research into the life and works of one of the American West's defining artists," said TU President Steadman Upman. "Having these materials together under one roof will provide unparaelled opportunities for researchers to study the materials in the Russell Research Collection within the context of the masterworks at Gilcrease."
This is the first major art acquisition for the Gilcrease Museum in west Tulsa since the University of Tulsa began managing the city-owned museum in July 2008.
