LANGSTON, Oklahoma -- It was homecoming at two Oklahoma universities Saturday, and one was trying to move past two reported shooting in the past few months and focus on a long-time tradition.

Over 20,000 people made their way to Langston University's homecoming festivities that included the traditional tailgate.

Officials and law enforcement set up shop at the university to get the word out about public safety. Oklahoma Highway Patrol officers said they were cracking down on drivers who may be drinking and driving, enforcing seatbelt laws and making sure there are no weapons on site. But, they also wanted to make sure everyone enjoyed the festivities.

“We're not out here to get them or anybody, we're out here to make sure we save a life and keep people safe,” said OHP Trooper Antonio Porter.

In this parking lot, many fans and alumni felt the officers’ presence meant they could enjoy the homecoming traditions without worry. Langston University alumni John Galloway has been grilling and cooking during the festivities, rain or shine, for the past 10 years.

“We just cook food, people come by and we share what we have with other people, just like a fundraiser, just having fun,” Galloway said. “I love it. This is the only way to go. A football game is a football game, but the tailgate is the party.”

Langston won 46 to 20 over Texas College.
