NORMAN, Oklahoma -- Norman police found a dead body in the trunk of a burning car Sunday morning near NE 144th Avenue and Indian Hills Road.

Norman 911 initially received the call as a car on fire at 4:47 a.m. and dispatched the fire department, police and EMSStat.

"Once they actually distinguished the vehicle, they popped the trunk and actually found the body in it," said Jennifer Newell with the Norman Police Department.

The Norman Police Investigations Bureau and the Norman Fire Department are investigating the incident as a homicide.

Police don't know who the person is and said with a charred crime scene, they're going to need additional help solving the crime.

"That's part of the reason why they transported everything to the Medical Examiner's Office," Newell said. "To make sure they're not going to miss some type of evidence."

With all agencies working together, police say the odds of solving the crime and catching a killer are better.

"Something that we might miss, they're going to be there to pick up and we'll be able to have a more complete picture," Newell said.

The ME’s office say it will take some time before they are able to identify the person who was killed because the body was so badly burned.

If you have any information about this incident, call Norman Police at (405) 321-1600.
