TULSA, OK -- Some Tulsa middle school students could be spending a little more time in class. Tulsa Public Schools is considering an extended learning program.

Dozens of folks gathered today at Tulsa's Education Service Center to hear the pitch. The program is modeled after one in Boston and could add 300 more hours to the school year.

Researchers say the extra class time helps boost student test scores. Up to three TPS middle schools could take part in the three-year project.

It could mean a longer school day or more days in the school year.

"Plus the enrichment part of extended learning is very important as well because it provides kids with opportunities they just won't get otherwise," said Dr. Keith Ballard, TPS Superintendent.

The district is looking for some community input before they decide to implement the program. If TPS does adopt extended learning time, it will pay for it with federal money.
