TULSA, OK -- Tulsa Mayor Kathy Taylor is on a mission to help feed the hungry.

She and her family spent the morning volunteering at the Community Food Bank, 1304 N. Kenosha.

Taylor is challenging Tulsans to donate what they can and says her family foundation will match dollar for dollar up to $10,000. That donation will provide 70,000 full meals.

"Oklahoma is now ranked - not the eighth - but the fourth hungriest state in the nation, so we said we're gonna do something about it, so we're helping," said Mayor Kathy Tulsa.

Nearly 16% of Oklahomans are "food insecure," which means they lack consistent access to adequate amounts of nutritious food. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, one out of every five children is at risk of going to bed hungry each night.

According to a press release from the Mayor's Office, less than 20% of those Oklahomans who are going hungry are actually unemployed. More than one-third are disabled and/or retired, while the remaining 46% have at least one family member working but simply can't make ends meet.

"More families than ever now require food assistance," Taylor said. "It is time to step up and help our neighbors."

Donations to the Community Food Bank can be made online at www.cfbeo.org/dfunds.html.

The Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma distributes donated food and other grocery items to 450 Partner Programs in 24 counties of Eastern Oklahoma. These programs include food pantries, soup kitchens, emergency shelters, after school programs and senior citizens centers.

These programs collectively feed 50,000 people each week – the equivalent of 621,000 meals per month.
