Tulsa's Violent Crime Rate Down Slightly, Police Say

Despite the increase in Tulsa's murder rate, police say the city is experiencing a downward trend in overall violent crimes.

TULSA, OK -- Despite the increase in Tulsa's murder rate, police say the city is experiencing a downward trend in overall violent crimes. Tulsa police have tracked crime and crime trends through its COMPSTAT program that began in January of this year.

Part 1 Crimes, including homicide, rape, robbery and aggravated assault, have decreased 11.9% in 2009, according to a press release from the Tulsa police. Part 1 crimes are homicide, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, larceny and auto theft.

Tulsa has had 66 homicides to date in 2009. That is an increase from 54 in 2008 and 62 in 2007.

Property crimes are slightly up by .9% though there is a decrease in auto thefts (down by 10.9%) and burglaries (2.1%). Property crimes include burglary, larceny and auto theft.

The downward trend in overall crime is for the second consecutive year.
