Classic Camaro Stolen In Delaware County

DELAWARE COUNTY -- Even if you are not a classic car lover, it will make you sick knowing this car was taken by thieves.

A classic American muscle car valued at $185,000 fell victim to thieves in Delaware County. Persons unknown made away with a pick up hauling a 48-foot enclosed trailer from Billups Classic Cars in West Siloam Springs.

Inside the trailer was the real prize: a 1968 Camaro Rally Sport Convertible that had been painstakingly restored by Billups employees.

The restoration company estimates that about 2,400 man hours had been invested in the classic car.

They restore classics for clients all over the world.

"We build pro touring cars, we build all original cars," Jason Billups, Billups Classic Cars.

One is the 1968 Camaro Rally Sport Convertible but on November 25th, it was stolen.

Jason Billups' heart sank.

"I couldn't believe someone would do that," Billups said.

About four in the morning, someone took a pickup hooked to a 48-foot enclosed trailer with the $185,000 classic car inside.

The truck was found parked at a convenience store in Inola. The trailer with the Camaro inside has not been found.

"That car was well known around the country.  So I hope we catch them," Billups said.

The 1968 camaro convertible is one of a kind, customized from the body, to under the hood, to the interior everything inside and out.

"Jason we're going to find it," Billups said.

For now, Billups has given the headsup to auctions and car shows across the country.
An insurance company is also offering a $2500 reward.

Billups fears the car is so unique, it could never be sold and might be parted out.

"A thief is a thief, but he still could be a car guy.  I'm hoping he has a conscience and can't take it apart," Billups said.

He hates to think of that happening to a car they spent three years restoring. The only hope is that it's found, and found soon.
