TULSA, OK -- Thousand of families are on their way to a happier Christmas thanks to some generous giving.
The Salvation Army started handing out gifts and food baskets to the families who had signed up nearly two months ago.
The presents for the children come from Angel Tree adoptions and toy drives across the area. They will help more than 5,000 families this holiday season.
That is about 1200 more families than last year because of the economy.
"Either they've lost their jobs or had to take jobs at lower pay, bills are higher, food costs are higher. We're seeing an awful lot of new people and it's wonderful to be able to help them," said Arletta Robinson, Food Basket Coordinator.
The Salvation Army has an assembly line set up so they can get a food basket in a car every 30 seconds.
