One Dead, One Wounded After Muskogee Police Standoff

One man is dead and a woman wounded after a police responded to a "shots fired" call in Muskogee Tuesday at about 11:43 p.m.

MUSKOGEE, OK -- One man is dead and a woman wounded after a police responded to a "shots fired" call in Muskogee Tuesday at about 11:43 p.m.

According to a news release from Muskogee Police, officers arrived at 1619 South Aberdeen  and found Michael Shane Johnson, 37, of Muskogee, in the front yard of the residence holding a firearm.

When he was told to drop the gun, the man fired one shot and ran inside the house.

Police officers surrounded the house, and the Muskogee Police Special Operations made contact with the Johnson, according to a press release.

When officers entered the residence, Johnson was found dead in the bathroom from an apparent gunshot wound.

Police also found a woman, 30-year-old Melissa Thayer of Muskogee, in the house with a gunshot wound.

Thayer was transported to Muskogee Regional Medical Center. There was no word on her condition.

The shooting remains under investigation.
