Judge Rules Oklahoma Doctor Competent to Stand Trial

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Judge Donald Deason ruled Dr. Stephen Wolf is competent to stand trial.

The Nichols Hills doctor accused of killing his son last fall appeared before a judge Tuesday to determine whether he is mentally competent to stand trial.

In court Tuesday, Wolf told the judge he has been taking mood stabilizers, blood pressure medication and antipsychotic drugs.

Judge Deason said he read and agreed with the findings from Dr. Wolf's mental evaluation, paving the way for his trial to proceed.

"I don't think anybody is surprised that he's actually competent. He was practicing medicine before this occurred. He's obviously a smart man. I don't think anybody was surprised," said Assistant District Attorney Suzanne Lister.

At times, Wolf was visibly upset, even crying in the courtroom prior to the proceedings.

Wolf will appear in court later this month for his preliminary hearing, which was previously delayed pending his competency evaluation.

Wolf was arrested last November 16 after police said he stabbed his 9-year-old son, Tommy, to death in his Nichols Hills home. Wolf could be heard on a 911 tape saying his son "had the devil in him."

Last month, Wolf's attorney Mack Martin requested a mental evaluation of Wolf because he was having a hard time communicating with his client.
