MCLOUD, Oklahoma -- Two workers were killed Tuesday afternoon in a construction accident near the Kickapoo Casino in McLoud, Lincoln County Emergency Manager Joey Wakefield said.
The workers died after being trapped when a hole collapsed at about 2:45 p.m. and dumped nearly two tons of dirt on top of the workers at the site near State Highways 62 and 102.
Construction workers tried to dig them out by hand, but it proved too dangerous, even for fire crews, to proceed with the rescues.
"Very crowded and very nervous. Had a lot of dirt coming in on top of us about as fast as we were trying to move it out to get to these guys," said Jacktown Fire Chief Greg Ford.
The construction site appeared to be part of a new housing development.
Rescue crews went into recovery mode early Tuesday evening. Crews were able to recover the first body at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. The other body was recovered about an hour later.
The names of the workers have not been released nor has the name of the company for which they worked.
