OKLAHOMA CITY -- One of the top three complaints NEWS 9's Consumer Watch Team consistently receives involves roofers.

There is little accountability for the roofing industry in Oklahoma. A state senator agrees and has authored a bill to require roofers to register. This isn't a license, so it doesn't guarantee that they will know what they're doing.

Some interpret what the bill's proposal entails is that it would weed out a bunch of the scammers and fly-by-night roofing companies that swarm into Oklahoma after a big storm. The bill would require roofers to prove they have insurance, particularly important if someone falls off a customer's roof, and worker's comp. It also would require them to give their physical address, great for trying to track down someone who hasn't finished the job – or to serve them with a lawsuit. And a part that is really great for the consumer is it would allow them to file a complaint with a state board if a roofer has engaged in fraud. This basically gives the consumer an extra person fighting for them. No legit roofer is going to want to have their permit pulled by the state, so they would hopefully do everything possible to rectify the situation.

The bill has passed out of committee, but it has many steps to go through before becoming law. Contact your state senator and representative and tell them what you think.
