FORT GIBSON---Historic Fort Gibson will soon begin a massive restoration project thanks to the million dollars in funding it was able to raise.
‘We're very pleased to announce that we've been able to put together some funding sources to accomplish the restoration of the fort,' said Kathy Dickson, Director of Museums and Historic Sites for The Oklahoma Historical Society, ‘we were able to secure a Save America's Treasures Grant for $200,000.'
That and $645,000 in T-21 funding as well as matching funds brings the total raised for the restoration project to over a million dollars. A ceremonial timber was ‘notched' today to commemorate the beginning of the restoration process which will replace much of the aging wooden timbers, re-roof the historic fort and provide repair for the site's hospital building.
