TU Engineering Students Present Designs for the Real World

TULSA---University of Tulsa engineering students underwent the final design reviews of their senior-level projects today at the Chapman Activities Center of the TU campus.

‘These students have been working all year, designing, building and testing real hardware for real customers,' said Professor of Mechanical Engineering John Henshaw, ‘we're very proud of what they've been able to come up with.'

The spring 2010 class of 30 students presented six different designs:

• A portable gas-powered turbine that provides electricity efficiently and cleanly.
• A human-powered vehicle that provides sustainable transportation for developing nations.
• A hand-powered tricycle built for a young girl paralyzed in an accident.
• An off-road vehicle the received high marks in a recent national competition.
• A multi-functional cart designed for the elderly and infirm.
• A tool that scans for fractures and corrosion in oil tanks.

‘We take all of these designs all the way from concept to final product,' said engineering student Blake Hylton, ‘we have to deal with all the design, all the modeling, all the fabrication, building them then all the testing and analysis. It's kind of a condensed form of the process and we get to see every step of it.'
