OKLAHOMA CITY -- Friends, family and members of the El Reno community gathered to honor and remember the life of 9-year-old Joshua Cawthon, who was killed while riding his bicycle earlier this week.

Joshua Cawthon was hit by a 60-year old driver on Tuesday evening near Oak Street and Gresham Street in El Reno. Cawthon lived in the area and attended school at Lincoln Elementary.

Nearly 100 people attended the vigil at Joshua's home in El Reno.

"It's been awesome. I can't thank them enough. It's been wonderful to know so many people care about our family and Joshua," said Leslie Thompson, Joshua's mother.

Those who knew Joshua said his laughter and smile left an impression they will never forget. Unfortunately, Thompson said the accident has also left a tragic lasting impression.

"It almost feels like a bad dream. Like I'll wake up and he will be here," Thompson said. "I hope other drivers will slow down. Pay attention. Stay off the phone."

This is the second child for Thompson to lose. She said she lost another child years ago to a medical condition.

It has been love and support that has kept the family going in trying times. Joshua's family said this is also one more chance for them to remind others to never take a child for granted.

"I want you folks to know, cherish those kids. They are everything. Love your kids. Watch out for them. Cherish them," said Glen Thach, Joshua's grandfather.

El Reno police said they are still investigating the accident and have requested cell phone records to determine if the driver was on the phone at the time Joshua was killed.

Joshua's funeral is scheduled for Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at the Wesley United Methodist Church in El Reno.

Joshua's family is hoping to raise money to pay for his funeral. Donations can be made under the Joshua Cawthon memorial fund at all Arvest Banks or the Rock Island Credit Union.
