OKLAHOMA CITY -- It is the peak of mosquito season right now. And while the season will last through November, standing water left over from last week's rain and flooding is creating a bigger pest problem.
Ray Ridlen with the Oklahoma County Extension office recommends mosquito dunks to help repel the pests. These pest control discs kill mosquito larvae and can be used wherever you have standing water.
The dunks are safe to use in pet water bowls, bird baths, flower pots and cost about $10 for a half dozen.
Ridlen said a natural way to repel mosquitoes is by dabbing on a bit of vanilla.
Reed Savage is the owner of SWAT Mosquito Mist System and said his company installs permanent mist systems along the perimeter of homes that repel the pesky insects. The systems cost between $2,500 and $3,500. However, Savage said monthly sprays outside a home costs about $90 each time.
But is it better to do it yourself or hire a professional to get rid of these pesky bloodsuckers? Professional companies who spray for mosquitoes have to have a special license through the Department of Agriculture.
