Sallisaw Union President Sentenced For Expense Padding

MUSKOGEE, OK -- A Sallisaw man serving as a labor union president was sentenced to a year and a day in prison for making false statements in an attempt to cover unauthorized expenses.

Daniel Greg Gibson, 51, was also ordered to pay almost $34,000 in restitution.

Gibson presented two falsified receipts during a Department of Labor financial edit of the AFGE labor union, according to a news release by Sheldon J. Sperling, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Oklahoma.

"During that audit it became evident that a large number of checks were written to various credit card companies over a period of seven years despite the fact that the union had no credit cards," Sperling said.

In 2008 Gibson presented two falsified receipts close to $35,000in an attempt to justify the unauthorized expenses, he said.

Gibson will begin serving his prison sentence in August, to be followed by two years of supervised release.
