TULSA, OK -- The Tulsa Health Department is urging parents to get their child's immunization shots early.
Officials says now is a good time to take advantage of the slower traffic at local clinics. On Saturday, they can bring the kids in to the James O. Goodwin Health Center, 5051 S. 129th E. Avenue, from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. on a walk-in basis .
There are several clinics where parents can take their kids - from birth to 12th grade - to get free immunizations.
And if you get this taken care of early, Health Department officials say that's one major step you won't have to worry about right before school starts.
The Health Department is seeing a pattern where parents with kids going to school for the very first time forget to update booster shots. So the health department is sending out a reminder: get that taken care of as soon as possible.
"We want to remind parents that we're also protecting them against very dangerous diseases," said Meredreth Maynard, a registered nurse with the Tulsa Health Department.
"For instance, the meningitis outbreak last year – we have a vaccination for 11-year-olds that helps prevent that. Chicken pox, which some people think is a very harmless disease, can be fatal."
The Health Department says Hepatitis A is one of the major vaccines that's given out. That vaccine's required for kids (from grades kindergarten to twelfth) transferring from out of state to Oklahoma.
If you have any questions locations, or what you need to bring in order to get your child vaccinated you can call the Tulsa Health Department at 918-582-WELL (9355).
Infants, children, and adolescents must be accompanied by their parent or guardian and bring a copy of their current immunizations record to receive immunizations.
