Salvation Army Needs Help Collecting Undergarments for Needy Children

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Last year, the Salvation Army gave away almost 1,300 undergarments to needy Oklahoma children. The organization is offering the same program again this year, but it needs the public's help.

"This year due to the economic conditions, we anticipate that we are going to see numerous requests. We would like to assist 3,000 to 5,000 individuals, but we know we need the public to really assist to support this event," said Ashley Jones, Salvation Army Central Oklahoma.

The Salvation Army is hoping people will assist by donating cash or items. The organization said for many families, purchasing new undergarments isn't a possibility when money is running low.

"We're trying to meet the need in providing undergarments. That could be such items as underwear, panties, bras, socks," Jones said.

Yet, like new backpacks and paper, the Salvation Army believes clean underwear is just as important as getting a new school started off right.

"A lot of the families we see have three to four children in their home. Well, that can be quite burdensome when you have to go and purchase new items for every child in your home," Jones said.

The Salvation Army has just a few weeks to collect all the garments needed for less fortunate families.
